Inspired by Duolingo’s addictive XP and level-up system, Skill Trek is a mobile-first platform that teaches life skills through gamified mini-modules. Users earn XP and achieve “real-life levels” by completing challenges, solving scenario-based quizzes, and unlocking achievements such as “Budget Boss” or “Kitchen Knight.” The skills covered range from budgeting and cooking to digital safety and first aid.
According to Adukaite et al. (2017), gamification is most effective when integrated into relevant, contextualized learning. Skill Trek simulates real-world problems with consequences, such as losing coins for poor time management or gaining power-ups for effective goal setting. The app can be tailored for teens transitioning into adulthood or for young professionals seeking practical tools.
However, Bogost (2007) warns against “exploitationware” when gamification prioritizes nudges and manipulation over genuine learning. Skill Trek must ensure its primary focus is on learning, with rewards as a secondary consideration. Overreliance on extrinsic rewards could lead users to “game the system” without truly retaining knowledge.
Nonetheless, Skill Trek could serve as a playful catalyst for everyday competence, making life administration feel more like leveling up in a game.
